An “Explosive” Evening at Open Roof!

We screened our first doc of the season, and did it ever pack a wallop! Audiences were gasping in audible shock at the wondrous, astoundingly dangerous theatrics that went down at the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico. BRIMSTONE & GLORY–an audience favourite at Hot Docs this year–delivered an emotional, thrilling roller coaster of spectacle, yet also highlighted heartwarming stories of families and friends brought together to celebrate San Juan de Dios.

Viktor Jakovleski’s documentary was made all the more vivid and timely with the knowledge that months after filming, an explosion in Tultepec, on the very site where the documentary was filmed, killed dozens and seriously injured many more. BRIMSTONE & GLORY is a reminder of the danger documentarians embark upon when attempting to capture such footage.

The film’s soundtrack, composed by Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin (of BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD fame) added to the evening’s revelry and created a unique outdoor soundscape–proving that Open Roof is both magic for the eyes, as well as the ears.

Here’s a sneak peek captured by @hyemusings from the audience:

Prior to that, the Mexican-influenced LOLAA performed their Latin American pop-inspired sounds. The unique musical vibes of sisters Lex Valentine and Nadia Valerie King perfectly suited the evening, which was programmed to celebrate Mexican and Latin American culture. Make sure to check our co-presenter the Pan American Food and Music Festival August 12-13!

Next week we invite you to dine with Salma Hayek, for what promises to be a very very awkward dinner party. Don’t miss the critically acclaimed dark comedy BEATRIZ AT DINNER with The Sinner’s Choir performing. See you there!
