Our COLOSSAL Opening!

Toronto took a break from the summer of rain for a beautiful and clear evening marking the launch of the 2017 Open Roof Festival. If the evening could be summed up in a single word it would be COLOSSAL!

Indie88 was offering free high fives as well as rounds of Plinko for prizes. Tokyo Smoke was on hand to speak about their emerging brand and to tempt patrons with espresso-based drinks made by a bicycle-powered machine! MINI showcased a sleek, sporty vehicle and Sundance Now gave away prizes.

Toben Food by Design’s truck offered a delicious menu of chicken schnitzel, jerk popcorn fish, and much more. We can’t wait to see what else they have to offer throughout the season. Toben Food by Design’s menu offerings will be curated with every screening in mind. And of course, our longstanding partner Amsterdam Brewery kept the ice-cold beer pouring throughout the night.

Within the onstage remarks, a fantastic contest sponsored by ORF co-presenter The Drake Hotel was announced: a $100 gift certificate to the Drake Hotel restaurant, as well as 2 tickets to the July 11th screening of THE BAD BATCH (with drinks included) is up for grabs (contest details: here). The music portion of the evening kicked off with Stacey Renee, whose soulful voice and backing band’s funky pop-rock instrumentals got the audience dancing in their seats. This was the first performance in a fantastic line-up that guarantees this season will have the ORF audience rocking out all summer long.

As the sun began to set we were treated to Nacho Vigalondo’s COLOSSAL starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. An ingenious blend of drama, comedy, and monster movie, the film never loses its humour even while addressing some darker, more psychological elements. With the audience cheering as kaiju battled it out in Seoul, COLOSSAL was the perfect film to start the festival! Fun, innovative, dark, yet heartening—what more could you ask for in an opening night film?

See you at our next instalment on July 4th where we will have Juno-award winning artist Tomi Swick performing followed by British provocateur Ben Wheatley’s action packed shoot out comedy, FREE FIRE! Remember to share the hashtags #MoviesMusicBeer #OpenRoof17 throughout the summer.
