Open Roof Festival is Toronto’s only outdoor event that combines film, local music and beer, making it a summer experience like no other!  With innovative and exciting programming, we highlight independent filmmakers and artists from Canada and around the world. A unique experience that is more than just a party, Open Roof is an evening of shared experiences and enjoying Toronto’s beautiful summer nights with friends.

As a not-for-profit Open Roof Festival is almost entirely volunteer-driven, where all profits are put forth in support of Canada’s independent film production and music communities.

Festival FAQs

What happens if there is rain or bad weather?

Open Roof Festival is an outdoor event and from time to time the weather does not co-operate. We do not yet control the awesome primal forces of nature and in some cases, when the weather is bad, we have to cancel an event due to danger to participants and equipment.

What happens to my ticket if an event is canceled due to bad weather?

If an event is canceled due to weather you will be offered the opportunity to redeem your ticket for another one of our events. Unfortunately, we are not able to issue refunds for events. If you are unable to attend another one of our events this season, you can transfer the ticket to a friend or donate the proceeds from your ticket to Open Roof, a not-for-profit festival.

How will I know if an event was canceled due to weather?

When an event is canceled due to weather we will notify through the email provided during the ticket sale process, as well as posting on our social channels. We at Open Roof Festival are avid weather-watchers and storm chasers and frequently monitor the weather radar. We will notify you as soon as possible about an event cancelation. If the weather is questionable, we will make a bad weather call by 6:15 PM on the day of the event at the latest.  Please check your email on the day of the event for updates.

What time do things happen at Open Roof Festival events?

On the day of our events the on-site box office opens at 7:00pm for cash only ticket sales. Food and drink are available at this time. Our musical guest performs at 8:00pm and the film screens around 9:00pm.

If I bought an advance ticket but I show up late will I still get a seat?

Like at most festivals the ticket you purchased to an Open Roof event guarantees you admission up until 15 minutes before the film begins (approximately 8:45pm). After this time we will then release your ticket to sell if there is demand (ie. people waiting in line).

And if I get in will I get a good seat?

Seating at Open Roof Festival events is on a first-come-first-served basis. Though our screen is big and the sound is loud, so all the seats are pretty great.

What does my $15 ticket get me?

For your $15 you get to see an amazing band play a full set and then watch a fantastic new film with friends! Unfortunately, drinks and food and merch cost extra, but it all goes to support local independent arts and businesses.

Are your events 19+ only events?

Age restrictions to our events are determined by the film’s rating, much like a regular cinema. When you arrive at our events our volunteers will give you a wristband, colour coded to allow you to purchase alcohol, or to not, if you’re underage. You can check the film’s page on our site for the rating if you’re unsure.

Can I smoke/vape at Open Roof Festival?

No, sorry. Open Roof Festival is a smoke free environment, though you are welcome to smoke outside the event area. Your wristband will get you in and out.

Can I bring my dog?

Your loveable furry four-legged friends are welcome to Open Roof, but they may be asked to leave if they are causing an unruly racket, ruckus or smell. Though this rule applies to all two-legged guests as well. Please remember to check our Twitter feed to make sure the event is being held outside. If we have to move the event indoors due to rain then pets are unfortunately not allowed to attend.

Okay, last question, is Open Roof actually on a roof?

Sorry, but no. I know we have the word ‘roof’ in our name but we’re actually on the ground level.
